Have you ever heard of the island Isla Mujeres? It’s a small island just off the coast of Mexico north of Cancun. Sign you up right? Yeah, me too. They are throwing a big party called the “Island Time Fishing Festival“. The event takes place February 15th – 19th and will include a Sailfishing Tournament, K9K Road Race, a beach bash, an Island Time Dinner Concert, Nightly Entertainment at JAX Beach, the Soggy Peso Happy Hour and the Isla Open Sand Volleyball Tournament.

This is the second year for this event, its a charitable event for “the Little Yellow Schoolhouse” here on the island, a school that serves local special needs children. The school totally function on donations.

I know it’s short notice, but if you happened to be in the area you might want to check it out.

Here is a bit of background on the Festival

Several North American friends that now live in Isla Mujeres, Mexico were reflecting on how they could contribute to the Island community who have made living here on Isla Mujeres so enjoyable. The idea of fishing and fun was discussed and the concept of the First Annual Isla Mujeres Fishing Festival was born. The plan was to take advantage of the incredible sailfishing that the island has to offer and create an event that was like no other on the island. An event that would rival the best charity events anywhere, an idea that would allow these fortunate people to give back in a big way to the island they love so much. This dream became a reality and the 1st Annual Island Time Fishing Festival was born. And what an event it was!

From the minute of its inception everyone was ready to lend a hand, get involved, donate time, money or whatever they could to make this dream a reality. It was truly phenomenal to witness the making of a small charity event turn into the most successful event the island has ever produced.

The decision was easily made to make this first event benefit the Little Yellow School House of Isla Mujeres. The Little Yellow Schoolhouse is a non-profit school that assists local special needs children and their families. As there is limited government funding for these children it was a natural to make this school the benefactor. The event started out to be a fun fishing tournament to raise money for The Little Yellow Schoolhouse but it quickly took on a life of its own. Through the efforts of several Nashville country music artists and executives, such as singer/songwriter Phil Vassar, Sony music executive Renee Bell, Emmy Award winner Tim Nichols and many others, support for this event quickly grew. The event then became not only a fishing tournament but a music festival as well, with Nashville’s finest singer/songwriters performing each night. The word quickly spread, more and more people wanted to be involved. Our goal of 20 boat entries was quickly met and the nightly entertainment was outstanding. The event was a true success with net profits exceeding $30,000USD.

The fishing was legendary and the party never ended…

The non-profit organization Help A special Child, Inc. was formed in 2010 to ensure the continuation of this wonderful cause. The Board of Directors wishes to thank all those who volunteered and contributed to making this such a successful event for these very special kids. We look forward to your support and contributions for the continued success of this event!
