Mexico receives more than 23 million tourists every year and is one of the world’s top 10 most popular holiday destinations. The country offers a wide range of destinations to all types of holidaymakers, whether they are families, couples on their honeymoon, senior travelers, or backpackers. Mexico offers attractions that will surely suit all preferences, from ancient archaeological complexes to vibrant nightlife, adventure holidays and treks including peaceful beach and countryside retreats and plenty of opportunities to learn about its culture and history.
An all-time favorite among budget travelers to Mexico, this southern province keeps attracting tourists year after year thanks to its impressive natural scenery, unique cultural life, and low prices. San Cristobal de las Casas is the regional capital and an important transport hub. You can take an overnight bus from Mexico City to San Cristobal for as little as £15, and once you arrive in San Cristobal, accommodation can be easily found for £4-£5 per night. Local food like quesadillas and sopes is on sale for just under £1 at most markets and street stalls.
2. The Guerrero Coast
Acapulco is the capital of the Guerrero state, and the city is known for its mile-long beaches and great nightlife. Basic budget hotels can be found in the old part of the city starting at £6 ($9.00) per night, but if you really want to cut down on accommodation costs and enjoy the beach life, head to Playa Medina, a couple of hours south of Acapulco. Here you can pitch your tent or sleep in a hammock for free, as long as you purchase a drink or two from the beach restaurants that own the premises.
3. Real del Monte
If you want to visit a typical Mexican village without traveling for hours, head to Real del Monte. This charming village is only a couple of hours away from Mexico City, and can be reached by public buses that cost less than £5 ($6.50). Budget accommodation in cute little hotels starts at £6 ($9.00) per person per night. The natural preserve of El Chico, just outside the village, allows you to pitch your tent free of charge and enjoy a range of outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains and lakes.
Although Cancun has always been depicted as the playground of the rich and famous, you need not break the bank just to be able to enjoy Cancun’s many varied attractions. There are plenty of budget accommodations to be found but some are quite far from Cancun’s famed beaches and clear blue waters and the luxurious resorts which line its magnificent coast. For the more adventurous, I’d suggest going on a trek to the Xcaret Eco-Archeological Park 46 miles off the south of Cancun. You can also opt to backpack and explore the Riviera Maya and the famed Yucatan Interior which boasts of some of the world’s best archaeological sites including Chichen Itza, a definite must-see if you are visiting Cancun.
If you are planning your direct holidays are now popular options, but need to stay within a rather limited budget, Mexico could be your ideal destination. The country offers a perfect getaway that combines conservation with fabulous sights and sounds epitomizing the exotic tradition of Mexico.
