When it comes to St. John in the US Virgin Island, you have probably heard of Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Hawksnest Bay, and so on. While these are jaw-dropping places to spend your day, Turner Bay is a great place to spend your nights.

Just over the hill and around a point from Cruz Bay to the south is a small coral beach known as Turner Bay. It might not get the publicity of it’s famous north shore cousins, but it just became one of my favorite places to be. Why? Because of a charming little place called Coconut Coast Villas...our home away from home on St. John.

If you have been following me on Facebook, you could tell that I spent a week on island soaking in the best this little VI rock had to offer. Here’s Castaway Crystal and myself enjoying a lazy beach day at Maho Bay. (We had one of the island donkeys snap this shot!)

We did Ram Head and Reef Bay trails, two boat days, two Coral Bay days and lots of beach hopping. All that exploring drained the tank of us two pirates. When a recharge was needed, we relaxed at our short-term island home, Coconut Coast Villas.

We stayed in the Poinsettia Suite which was a single king bed studio apartment, complete with kitchen, day bed, and HUGE balcony with table, chairs and even an lounger. Poinsettia is located on floor two of the second building and overlooks the pool and the blue water of Turner Bay. We would sit on the balcony sipping wine and rum, watching the car ferries come and go. I could sit out there forever.

Coconut Coast Villas St John

While Coconut Coast did have an intimate pool area, hot tub, grill, and plenty of beach toys to throw in your Jeep, the best part in my opinion was the coral beach. The coral rocks of Turner Bay on St. John would sing us to sleep every night. With each receding wave the rocks would tumble down each other creating a wonder and unique sound. Here’s a small taste of what I’m talking about. Now just imagine having your sliding door open all night. Sweet island dreams indeed.

The property is managed by Dave and Julie, an amazing couple that couldn’t be nicer. They made sure we had a great time, had plenty of supplies for our beach days and told us about the short nature trail that leads to Cruz Bay. It cuts 10 minutes and a couple huge hills off the walk to town.

Another aspect I really like about staying in a villa or studio apartment is you really get to feel like your part of the island. Almost as if your living there, even if it’s just for a week. That’s the way we felt in our room. We went out and did grocery shopping, cooked breakfast, made sandwiches for the beach and hand plenty of room to keep a case of Carib cold and ready. You just can’t get that feeling when staying at a resort. While resorts and hotels are nice, I prefer to “pretend” I live on island, doing the same things as I would at home.

Here are a few more photos from our time at Coconut Coast Villas.

The rates are great, the location is perfect, and you’ll feel right at home. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

The next time you visit St. John, do yourself a favor and give Dave and Julie at Coconut Coast Villas a call. Then you too will find the treasure in Turner Bay.

Cheers!
