After one sip, you’ll be sailing round the BVI.
As if we Castaways really need another reason to grab a bottle of rum and toast to the island life. But if you do need one, today is National Cocktails Day. Enough said.
To help you celebrate the day in your own home, check out the new Castaway Cocktails ebook. There’s 52 Caribbean drink recipes just screaming to be made and enjoyed.
In honor of National Cocktail Day (March 24), I thought it would be a good idea to imagine ourselves in the British Virgin Islands. Some of us just arrived to West End on the St. Thomas ferry while others flew into Beef Island. It doesn’t matter how we got there, let’s all jump in a fast boat and head to a beach bar.
First stop, the Rum Bar on Cooper Island for a Rum & Port Cobbler.
Rum & Port Cobbler
Ingredients:
- 1½ oz Mount Gay Black Rum
- 1 oz Ruby Port
- ½ oz sugar syrup
- 2 wedges lemon
- 1 wedge orange
Mixing Instructions:
Muddle lemon, orange and sugar syrup in a rocks glass. Fill with ice then pour in rum and port. Stir and pull everything through the ice. Garnish with orange wheel & sprig of thyme. Raise glass and toast.
Next stop on our National Cocktail Day in the BVI is Aromas Bar for an Island Fusion Mojito.
The Island Fusion
Aromas Bar (Bartender Mic Tenn)
Ingredients:
- 3 oz dark Brugal Rum
- 3 oz tamarind juice (can substitute with mango juice)
- 2 oz coconut water
- ½ starfruit
- 6 whole gooseberries (can substitute with strawberries)
- ½ half wedge of watermelon
Mixing Instructions:
Place all ingredients into a cocktail shaker; then crush them and strain over ice. Serve in a hurricane glass. Garnish with a whole tamarind pod, starfruit, and watermelon balls. Raise glass and toast.
Last on our BVI island hopping day is Myett’s Beach Bar and Grill, located right on the sand of Cane Garden Bay on Tortola. Let’s bell-up to the bar and grab one of their badass Bushwackers.
Coras’ Bushwacker
Myett’s – Cane Garden Bay, Tortola
Ingredients:
- 1 bottle of vodka (your choice)
- ½ bottle of Kahlua
- ½ bottle of Baileys
- 3 oz Frangelico
- 4 oz Amaretto
- 1 can Coco Lopez
Mixing Instructions:
Add all ingredients to a blender with ice. Blend until smooth. Line the inside of your glass with chocolate syrup. Pour blender mix into glass. Raise glass and toast.
Let me know if you mix up one of these BVI cocktails and what you thought. Or better yet, let’s all hop a fast plane south and do a little island hopping so we can enjoy these drinks in their natural habitat. Everything seems to taste just a little better in the Caribbean.
Cheers and happy National Cocktail Day!
